Baby Bump is a hip and cute collection of questions and FAQs about pregnancy.

Knowing little and feeling intensely nervous, I turned to this book in order to ease my fears and become informed. I wanted to have the feel of having a conversation with a friend who recently had kids who was informed, but not judgmental (and also with an amazing memory!). This book was only partially accommodating.

My biggest gripe is that I found it redundant. I hate it when questions are answered with phrases like "refer to page 38." It did seem like they went over the same things again and again. And most of the topics were the "this could be nothing, but depending on you, your health, the baby, or the pregnancy this might be an emergency…" This book proves that pregnancy is too complex to be made into hip paragraphs that are cool because they use the phrase "knocked up." This book is a shortcut. I think it should only be used as a companion piece.

And, although this might be obvious, why buy a book that directs you to a free website? The charts and graphs are the nicest feature of this book, but you can also get these charts online at the website for free. Which begs the question, why the book?

Save some cash and use a more thorough read that goes into the complexities. Join the website for free and create your own baby binder using the charts and interesting tidbits.

My wife has read a ton of pregnancy books (What to Expect When You’re Expecting, The Girlfriend’s Guide to Pregnancy, Your Pregnancy Week by Week, etc.). She was interested to see how this book compares, and here’s her take on it.

It was fun, colorful, and had hilarious anecdotes to read. It won’t give you all the info you’ll need as an expecting pregnant woman, as it’s not touted to be the most technical book available. But if you’ve read those other books, you already know that stuff anyway. The way "The Baby Bump" is different is in its approach – it never takes itself too seriously, yet it presents hundreds of tips most pregnant women wish they knew in a very unassuming way. She found it hilarious that every month Ms. Roney compared the size of the baby to piece of fruit (e.g. this month our baby is the size of a watermelon!). She also loved (and cringed) at reading the sometimes funny, sometimes scary, anecdotes that happen to women while they’re pregnant (some I’m sure would sensor so I won’t even try). Let’s just say – she was really shocked to read about some of the more, ummm…"physical" things that she should expect towards the end of the pregnancy.

This book was also fun for me (the husband) to read, and not nearly as boring as the more technical books out there. So, as long as you don’t have unrealistic expectations that this book is the new "What to Expect When You’re Expecting", there is a lot to love about "The Baby Bump’s" approach. My wife and I found it immensely entertaining. Recommended!

The verdict is in, and our impartial judge at Spudman Industries, after eliciting feedback from female coworkers and Mrs.Spudman declares "The Baby Bump" a winner across all demographics.

No, I’m not pregnant, and neither is Mrs. Spudman, but our Spudette is, and that’s the reason I chose this book from . We think this is a very good book, the kind of book Mrs. Spudman wishes she’d had thirty years ago.
The ten, month to month chapters flow well and build on and link to what came before. Roney’s book is chock full of pertinent information from those who’ve been there and is made easy to digest with plenty of illustrations, sidebars, and charts.

In the back of the book are some very useful and well designed checklists for the new mother:
breastfeeding tracker
bottle feeding tracker
sleep tracker
At the bottom of each checklist page is a chart for keeping track of baby’s diaper changes with little diaper icons for pee or poo.

We especially like the size analogies for the baby as it progresses in the pregnancy, going from poppy seed to watermelon. As I write this, our grandchild to be (our first)is a pea. Two really neat charts are the when are you due chart and the Chinese predictor of gender chart.

The author includes additional internet references at the book’s end, including the bump dot com. I explored the site before writing this review and think it is also excellent and should be a destination for expectant mothers, especially first timers.

At times the content is quite frank and eschews euphemisms when discussing vibrators, sex, and bowel movements.
Like a direct, honest approach in a book that answers those questions you don’t want to say outloud?
Then this is the book for you.
